MOST WEDDING DAYS have their share of hurdles and hitches to overcome, but it’s fair to say the bride in the eight-part series Wedding Season has a more difficult time than most.
Brand New Cherry Flavor’s Rosa Salazar plays bride-to-be Katie, whose wedding to
Hugo, the son of a terrifying property magnate, is suddenly derailed when her jilted lover,
Stefan, bursts into the church to object.
When the groom and his family are later found poisoned, Stefan is arrested by the police.
‘Stefan’s shocked to hear that Hugo and his family have been murdered,’ says Gavin Drea, who plays him. ‘The police think Stefan’s done it, but Stefan thinks Katie’s done it, and he’s swept up in this murder mystery.’
In flashbacks, we see how Katie and Stefan fell for each other and began an affair, despite Katie being engaged to Hugo.
‘Stefan’s a hopeless romantic who’s at that stage in his life where everyone around him is settling down, and he’s feeling the pressure,’ says Drea. ‘Stefan has instant chemistry with Katie – the only hitch is she’s getting hitched!’
So what attracts them to one another? ‘Stefan and Katie are like kindred spirits, who both feel quite lonely in the worlds they’re in,’ adds Drea. ‘They each understand what it is to be an outsider, and they connect in that way.’ Back in the present day, Stefan and Katie embark on a tense cat-andmouse chase across the UK and America as they try to clear their names. To enhance the feeling of jeopardy, the actors did many of their own stunts.
‘It was terrifying but great,’ says Drea, who starred in Vikings: Valhalla. ‘I felt out of my depth, but that’s how Stefan feels.
The more often I could do the stunts, the more realistic the scenarios would feel. Besides, once Rosa did the stunt, I had no choice. I had to keep up with her – or at least try to!’
