Eyebrows were raised when it was announced that the most American of actors, Dustin Hoffman, was to direct that most British of genres, a gentle comedy, set in a home for retired musicians. But he really pulls it off, aided by a top-drawer cast including Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins and – at full diva pitch – Maggie Smith, as the fading opera star who can save Beecham House if she can be persuaded to perform at a benefit gig. But will the battleaxe say yes?
