Why did you want to take part in Celebrity Masterchef?

When you’re on tour, you tend to either eat out or eat salads in the dressing room. I suddenly realised how little I knew about cooking – and how inventive the others were! I took one look at the Mystery Box and thought, ‘I don’t know what to do’, but then something kicked in and I started running on autopilot.

did John and gregg take kindly to your cooking?

I think they struggled to

find ways to comment sometimes, but they did have twinkles in their eyes! They realised I was nervous and cooking things I’d never done before – I think a few things pleased their palates. I also said I had stomach tablets if they needed them!

is it fun developing a new skill now that you’re in your 70s?

Oh yes! Doing Masterchef is like being a kid again – it took me back to being young, being a student and wanting to learn. I want to try harder now if friends come round for dinner and I’m not afraid to experiment. It’s been a wonderful experience.

Many people will know you from the Carry On films – did you ever cook for your Carry On co-stars?

I didn’t, but [late Carry On legend] Hattie Jacques used to cook every Sunday for any actors that felt in need of a good Sunday meal. She opened her home to all and the place was full of the joy of people getting together. Hattie was an incredible lady; such a delight, totally professional, and she had a lovely kindness of spirit.
