Phillip schofield can’t hide his delight as he chats to TV Times about the latest series of his ITV game show 5 Gold Rings. Here, This Morning host Phillip, 56, tells us all about his revamp…
Why have you tweaked the format for series two?
In the first series, you’d have, for example, two guys who couldn’t find Paris on a map and it went on and on. So we thought it would be better if one contestant has a go, then the other – that way the show moves faster. We also wanted people to be able to play games at home. And the prize money has gone up to £50,000; I like giving money away!
How successful has the interactive app been?
My absolute favourite thing about this show is that people can play at home. I was thrilled at how well the first series went. It was amazingly popular all over the world and the app got 500,000 downloads in the UK.
Who is the 5 gold Rings expert in the schofield household? Well, I’ll let you into a little secret. My wife, Steph, plays along on the app with Declan
Donnelly. So she’s sitting there while I’m watching the telly or tweeting, and Dec will Whatsapp her asking about her score and then they brag to each other about who has scored the highest.
What other shows have you got coming up?
This Morning will be back this week for a new series and it’s the show’s 30th anniversary this year, so that’s going to be a big one for us. Then Holly [Willoughby] and I will be throwing ourselves headlong into Dancing on Ice. We’re beginning now to pitch our ideas about who could be contestants. I have hounded Rylan Clarkneal – he’s a really good skater but he won’t do it. He says, ‘It’s too ’ard, I’ll hurt meself!’ But I’ll keep pestering him...
Can you tell us more about what’s in store to celebrate this morning’s big milestone? There is definitely a 30th-anniversary primetime show and there is one other surprise, which is lovely. I definitely cannot say what it is, but it’s something that has made us all very proud.
and will there be a big behind-the-scenes party to celebrate? Absolutely – you can bet your life on it!
