the hunt to find the royal institute of British architects’ House of the year 2018 continues. This time the focus is on buildings with a past that have been made into the most spectacular modern homes. Kevin Mccloud, architect Damion Burrows and design expert Michelle Ogundehin have five of the very best to view, beginning with a characterful old gin distillery in east London. There’s also a farmhouse in Devon that perfectly mixes the old and new, a house built in 1790 in Bath that now includes an ultramodern extension, a 400-year-old farmhouse rescued from the very brink of collapse and, finally, a unique home inspired by a shed that includes a mirrored library at its heart.

Not too shabby: The library in the house inspired by a shed
