Explosion by numbers

1 The devastating explosion in the opening of the first episode was not all it seemed. ‘The bombing was filmed with help from a visual-effects company,’ says series producer Laura Hastings-smith. ‘To make it feel real, we filmed elements separately – explosions, glass shattering, debris and smoke – then the VFX team put it all together.’

Thanks, Prime Minister!

2 ‘Filming with a drone during a night shoot at the Acropolis in Athens was a first,’ says executive producer simon cornwell, the son of author

John le carré. ‘We were glad the Greek Prime minister gave us permission.’

Michael’s method

3 Hollywood star michael shannon, aka Israeli spymaster Kurtz, stayed in character between takes. ‘He’s a consummate professional,’ says Laura. ‘When the cameras stopped rolling, michael took time to resurface.’

Props from ebay

4 The team hunted high and low to find 1970s props. ‘We looked everywhere for recorders and telephones,’ says production designer maria Djurkovic. ‘some stuff was used on the 2011

[John le carré] film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and other things we found in vintage shops and ebay!’

Inspirational sister

5 Lead character charlie (Florence Pugh) is based on John le carré’s sister, actress charlotte cornwell. ‘charlotte starred in [ITV drama] Rock

Follies in the 1970s,’ says simon. ‘she was the starting point for the novel – although not the end point, I hasten to add!’
