Comedian Victoria Wood took a break from playing it for laughs
to write and star in ITV’S poignant World War Two drama Housewife, 49, which was based on the wartime diaries of real-life Lancashire housewife Nella Last.
Victoria played Nella, who joined the Women’s Voluntary Service during the war and found a sense of purpose away from her oppressive husband, Will (David Threlfall).
‘Nella realised that she could live a life beyond her claustrophobic relationship with her husband,’ said Victoria. ‘I hope people don’t think this is just a jolly northern comedy. This is something quite different.’
