In 1968, he made his TV drama debut in A Mat­ter of Di­a­monds, as a young vil­lain in­volved with a gang of crooks. ‘It’s a nice role to get one’s teeth into and noth­ing like me,’ he told us.

In 1988, in his 30th an­niver­sary year, he told us how he had de­cided to put work be­fore ro­mance. ‘I was 19 and felt the choice was thrown at me that I ei­ther had my ca­reer or my girl­friend,’ he re­vealed. ‘I chose my ca­reer. I have not been dis­ap­pointed.’ but in 1990, he opened up to us about his re­grets at not be­com­ing a dad. ‘I am sad not to have had a fam­ily of my own,’ he said. ‘In a per­fect world, I would have liked to have a boy and a girl.’
