Life... and death?
Sinead gives birth to a boy – but will mother and son be okay?
Daniel is faced with the prospect of losing his family within a short space of time
Weatherfield gets a new resident this week, as Sinead and Daniel welcome a baby boy, whom they name Bertie – a nod to Ken’s Uncle Albert.
The nipper isn’t due for some time, but when cancer-stricken Sinead attends her latest hospital appointment, things take a shock turn. The oncologist explains that her tumour has grown, and she needs to start radiotherapy immediately. But first, the baby must be delivered…
‘Daniel thinks it’s far too soon,’ reveals Rob Mallard, who plays the expectant dad. ‘So much has just been revealed – like the fact that Sinead was swerving chemo – and this is too much to take in. He’s afraid that the baby may be too small to survive.’
As word gets back to Weatherfield, Sinead’s pals organise an impromptu baby shower. Sinead is then taken into theatre for a C-section.
The latest descendant of the Barlow clan soon arrives – but as the premature tot is whisked off to a neonatal unit, Sinead suddenly falls unconscious.
‘In that moment, Daniel sees himself having to go on without her,’ adds Rob. ‘The prospect is absolutely terrifying. He couldn’t look after himself without Sinead, let alone with a baby, too.’
Daniel’s choked up when he later introduces his tiny son to Ken, terrified of what the future may hold. But as he frets about his ill wife, little does he realise that his son isn’t very well, either. The doctors are worried and soon break the news that Bertie has a bowel condition.
‘It confirms Daniel’s fears that Bertie might not be developed enough to survive,’ adds Rob, ‘and Daniel is faced with the prospect of losing his family within a short space of time.’
When Sinead later comes round and asks after their little ’un’s condition, Daniel doesn’t want to worry her and pretends that everything is okay.
