PREMIERE drama ⊲ Well deserving his best actor Oscar, Casey Affleck is heartbreakingly good as a man overwhelmed by grief and guilt in this superb drama. His character is a prickly Boston janitor who reluctantly returns to his New England home town (the coastal Manchester of the title) to care for teen nephew Lucas Hedge, after the death of Affleck’s older brother Kyle Chandler. The movie has a quiet restraint, slowly revealing the ghosts that are haunting him. The cast all hit their emotional marks perfectly, including Michelle Williams as Affleck’s ex-wife.
