We caught up with stars

Jeff Hordley and Charley Webb to get the inside story of the dramatic Dales development…

How are Debbie and Cain faring in the run-up to Cain’s confession? Jeff: Cain’s in a bad place; he’s

holding on to the precipice and is ready to burst. The guilt is eating him up, because he can see how upset Debbie is. Charley: Debbie has tried to forget about Joe since he left, but every time she hears about him or something crops up, she goes straight back to thinking, ‘I need to find out what happened.’

So tell us what happens during the big reveal… Jeff: Moira tells Cain to go out to clear his head, because he’s had such a horrific day after Id-ing a body. He goes to the garage and Debbie’s there, and that’s when it all spills out. He sees how upset she is and just thinks, ‘I’ve got to say something.’ So he does… Charley: At the garage, Debbie’s saying, ‘This is how my life’s going to be. Every time there’s a body that could be Joe’s, I’ll have to identify it, until one day it might be his.’ So Cain just blurts out what he’s done. The shock hits her. She can’t stay in the same room as him.

Then Debbie finds out about Graham’s involvement?

Jeff: Yes, Cain doesn’t mention Graham when he explains what

It is 100 per cent about the betrayal

happened, but when Debbie goes to Home Farm, Graham tells her that he was involved as well. When Cain turns up, it’s just a barrage of information that’s coming at her like flying bullets. Charley is tremendous in those scenes. Charley: That was really intense. I think Debbie is a little bit numb to the whole thing, so I decided to play it a bit differently, and not do the obvious shouting.

is Cain’s betrayal of Debbie worse than the crime itself? Jeff: Yes, it’s more about the betrayal than the death, which sounds ridiculous, because a loss is a loss, isn’t it? But it’s a double whammy for Debbie. She’s lost the love of her life and the rock in her life in one go. Charley: It is 100 per cent about the betrayal. She’s so upset that Joe is dead, but as time goes on, it’s all about the fact that Cain has lied to her so badly.

Cain still doesn’t know that it was Graham who murdered Joe.

How will he react if he finds out the truth? Jeff: It’s an understatement to say he’s going to be angry. Watch out, Graham! Cain has still never killed anyone, but he could see red then.

what does Cain now have to do to win back Debbie’s love? Jeff: I really don’t know! I’m hoping for miracles from the writing team, because it’s going to be tough. There will be a way back, I’m sure, but where and when, I couldn’t say. Charley: I can’t really see how Debbie will forgive Cain. If it comes out that Graham killed Joe, then hopefully that might be how they get round it.

are you hoping they can mend their relationship?

Jeff: Yes, and I’m hoping sooner rather than later because working with Charley is one of my favourite things on this show. And we have a good laugh while doing it. Charley: Absolutely! Their relationship is Debbie’s one constant, so it would be a shame for them not to get back on track. And me and Jeff are so close that it would be rubbish if we weren’t working together. He’s one of my best friends, and if we’re on set for ages, he’ll bring me chocolate or make me a cup of tea. We spend so much time together, in and out of work, that sometimes I feel like I’m married to him!

2018 was a rotten year for Cain and Debbie. what’s in store this year? Jeff: Another rotten year! But I’m hoping for some happiness. Natalie [J Robb, who plays Moira] and I always say it’s great when Faith is around, because there’s a lightness that adds to the darker stuff we have to do, and it sometimes brings a comic element to the proceedings. Charley: I hope it will be a better year for Debbie – it would be nice to not have to come into work and cry every day! But then it’s always interesting to have the drama.

I’m sure they’ll make her happy for a bit… and then ruin it all!

I’m hoping for miracles from the writing team..
