We meet the worthy winners of this year’s TV Times Awards
It’s been a tremendous 12 months of telly, and this year almost 59,000 of you voted in our prestigious annual awards. Here, we meet all the worthy winners…
SURANNE JONES FAVOURITE ACTRESS
Playing real-life 19th-century lesbian landowner Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack has been the role of a lifetime for Suranne Jones, and she’s thrilled her performance in Sally Wainwright’s BBC1 period drama has seen her named your Favourite Actress.
‘Thank you so much TV Times and your wonderful readers!’ Suranne beams when we present her with her award, as well as Gentleman Jack’s trophy for Favourite Drama (see below) at Korto restaurant in north London. ‘I have received so many beautiful letters from viewers explaining the importance of representation – proving that, if it’s done in the right way, a primetime drama can make a huge impact as well as be thoroughly entertaining. Thank you, Sally Wainwright!’
GENTLEMAN JACK FAVOURITE DRAMA
There’s double success for Gentleman Jack, as you’ve also voted for the BBC1 saga to win Favourite Drama! The fast-paced, fiendishly funny series was a labour of love for writer and director Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax), who spent many years trying to bring the project to our screens, having been inspired by Anne Lister’s fascinating diaries. And Sally couldn’t be more pleased with the show’s twin victory. ‘I’m absolutely delighted. Every single member of that cast and crew worked so hard on the show,’ says Sally, who’s already working on series two.
‘And I’m thrilled for Suranne, who poured her heart and soul into being Anne Lister.
Wonderful news.’
