Musical theatre is a fickle business. Lionel Bart’s Oliver! was a massive stage hit in London and New York in the early 1960s but by the time of this 1968 film adaptation, Bart’s Robin Hood musical Twang!! had flopped so badly it lost him his fortune. Perhaps it was an exclamation mark too far. Oliver!, however, has proved to be timeless, and is reliably solid bank-holiday entertainment, with Ron Moody, Shani Wallis and Mark Lester on fine form among a great cast. Its five Oscars include Best Musical Score – sing along for maximum enjoyment. ★★★★
