Meet the new midwife!

Cork-born actor Megan Cusack, 24, talks to TV Times about playing the hit drama’s latest recruit...

-

You make your debut as student midwife Nancy Corrigan this week – what’s she like? When her grandmother passed away years ago, Nancy ended up in an orphanage run by nuns. When she arrives at Nonnatus House, it’s like she sees this as an opportunity to become more of the person she wants to be. Nancy is a bit ditzy, like myself, and fairly erratic but she’s got a big heart, she’s very warm and she’ll chat to anyone… though she doesn’t think before she speaks, which can make people nervous!

Can you give us any teasers about what’s coming up for her?

We learn there’s a lot more to Nancy bubbling under the surface and she goes on quite a journey. Nancy finds herself in some tough situations, but she handles it well.

Did you enjoy filming the World Cup scenes?

Something like that is such a momentous occasion, so it was a joy to film. It’s like you’re putting yourself back in that time in 1966, so you still get that feeling of excitement, even though you know who wins!

You’re the niece of actors Sinéad, Sorcha, Niamh and Catherine Cusack. Have they given you any advice?

My family have been vital at times. With regards to performing, they’ve always told me to just enjoy it. My grandma is a big fan of Call the

Midwife. She was a midwife herself, so she’s given me tips. I don’t think me becoming a midwife would be a good thing, though. I’m not good in high-pressure situations!
