Theresa Ryan & daughter Orla Healy

(Sinéad Keenan & Lola Petticrew)

-

Theresa is shaken when her daughter, Orla, confesses she is pregnant. Orla’s abusive ex-boyfriend is the father and she wants a termination. But with options and information limited, Theresa orders abortion pills online – keeping everything secret from her religious family, friends and loving husband Mark (Killing Eve’s Owen Mcdonnell).

The family are plunged into a living nightmare, however, when Theresa finds herself at the centre of a court case and facing prison.

‘When I read the script, I couldn’t say no. Coming from where I do, I’ve always been keenly aware of abortion laws,’ says Dublin-born Sinéad, 43.

‘The woman I play wanted her anonymity protected at all costs, such is the shame and stigma surrounding abortion in Northern Ireland. To have a termination is a difficult choice. I hope this drama gives people pause for thought.’

‘It was so important to me that I did this character and person justice,’ adds Lola, 25. ‘Shooting was long and emotional. But we wanted to get it right for the women who have let us tell their stories.’
