Paul Abbott’s Bafta-winning drama ran for four series between 2000 and 2003 with a cast list that reads like a who’s who of British acting – Sarah Lancashire, Christopher Eccleston, Lesley Sharp, Siobhan Finneran and Philip Glenister are in series one, with further series including Ricky Tomlinson, Lindsey Coulson, Sophie Okonedo and David Morrissey. As the title might suggest, the action centres on the personal lives of a group of Manchester factory workers, with the first episode focusing on Stuart (John Simm), a man who returns home after being missing for more than a year.
