Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s scattershot, freewheeling comedy drama is set back in California’s San Fernando Valley, 1973, where 15-year-old child actor Gary (Cooper Hoffman, son of Philip Seymour Hoffman) falls for aimless 25-year-old Alana (Alana Haim). Their funny, tender relationship is the spine of this beautifully crafted and realised movie, an episodic ride that takes in real characters from the time (Bradley Cooper’s take on hairstylist and producer Jon Peters is one for the ages).
