Director Paul Thomas Anderson sets out to make a 1970s movie and pretty much gets it all right in this skewed relationship drama about a geeky kid (Cooper Hoffman) trying to woo a young woman (Alana Haim) way out of his league. She’s much older than him, for one, but also cooler and clearly going places, whereas Gary (Hoffman) might have started out as a child star but is now on the slide. You may not know the leads, but Cooper is the son of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Alana is a member of the band Haim. There’s also a superb film-stealing cameo by Bradley Cooper that even tops the one by George Dicaprio, father of Leo, as a waterbed salesman. Is anything more 1970s? ★★★★
