A breathtaking opening look at a range of frozen environments from the North and South Poles to mountains and oceans sees emperor penguins trekking across sea ice in Antarctica, a polar bear in the Arctic battling to feed her cubs and killer whales in Antarctica hunting by creating waves to knock Weddell seals into the ocean.
‘In Greenland, we filmed the melt lakes, where every year, millions of tonnes of ice are falling off,’ says the episode’s producer, Alex Lanchester. ‘We also filmed a Siberian tiger looking for black bears in Russia. Seeing that was incredible – it was a labour of love to capture it. Then, in Canada, grizzly bears emerge from hibernation just when musk oxen have their calves and there’s nowhere to hide…’
