‘SHE KNOWS SHE CAN’T FIX HIM’

Lucianne on a possible happy ending for Perez and Meg…

-

You joined Shetland for its sixth season. Were you already a fan of the show?

I was. I first picked it up in series three, then when I was cast, I watched it all from the beginning.

I was delighted to get this role, and to go to Shetland.

I’d never been and I fell in love with it completely! I would live there in a heartbeat.

Meg’s relationship with Perez has been a real slow burn. Was that interesting for you to play?

Really delicate, just lovely.

I’m grateful that the writers have allowed it space to be a truthful relationship between two people who are very busy and who aren’t in the first spring of youth.

I feel there’s definitely a respect between the two of them. But whether they’re going to take that risk they need to take for things to develop is up in the air…

Last week, Meg told Perez that the pain he carries from his work might be too much for her. Is there still hope?

They’re both wary, because of the experiences they’ve had. Meg knows, or senses, that Perez hasn’t the healthiest relationship with his work, in terms of how much he allows it to affect his personal life.

She also knows she can’t fix him – and she’s not interested in being the one who saves him. But the difficult thing is, she’s mad about him!

Do you think they would make a good couple?

I do! Neither of them will make it too easy on the other. Meg is going to call out Perez on his decisions, or his reluctance to be open about his own feelings, and that probably serves for a healthy relationship.

There are lots of possibilities for them. They could have loads of years of happiness ahead, if they can get out of their own way!

Meg gets caught up in a bomb scare this week. How did you find filming such a high-stakes scene?

It was loads of fun

– it might seem unbelievable that Meg pops up everywhere, but it’s a very small place [laughs]!

That was actually the last day of filming, so there was a real sense of event that day. It was lovely to watch Dougie film his final scenes, knowing that’s the last scene he and Alison O’donnell [AKA DS Alison ‘Tosh’ Mcintosh] are going to shoot together. To witness that felt like a real privilege.

?? ?? Will they, won’t they? Meg and Perez have to confront their feelings
