One of the greatest films on Michael Caine’s CV, Get Carter sees Caine’s London gangster Jack Carter heading up to Newcastle to see what’s what after his brother suddenly dies. It’s a film full of atmospheric set pieces and memorable lines – ‘You’re a big man, but you’re in bad shape’ – and the picture it paints of the gangster life is anything but glamorous. Incidentally, Ian Hendry was originally slated to play Carter and was furious when Caine got the role. That's why their scenes together are so spiky. SM
