Winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 2017, Barry Jenkins’ poetic masterpiece is an epic character study of masculinity, solidly grounded in humanity. Separated into three chapters, this follows the travails of a black man in America: the bullied kid (Alex R Hibbert), the confused teenager (Ashton Sanders) and, finally, the man (Trevante Rhodes, currently to be seen as Mike Tyson in the Disney+ series Mike) who must come to terms with who he is. All three actors are superb, completing the whole character as they struggle to gain a foothold in society, while also dealing with their sexuality. An impressive cast also includes an Oscar-winning Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Janelle Monáe. ★★★★★ NP
