It seems fitting, if slightly astonishing, that the total number of films in the Halloween franchise is 13, with the very-final-sounding Halloween Ends released earlier this month. But horror aficionados will tell you that none of the sequels come close to this 1978 original (2018’s Halloween, available to watch on BBC iplayer, is by far the best of the rest). Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence star in John Carpenter’s groundbreaking low-budget horror, which went on to become one of the most successful independent films of all time. ★★★★★ JP
