BBC4 is devoting an evening to the singer Petula Clark, who will be 90 on 15 November. Having begun as a child entertainer for BBC Radio during World War Two and still working now – she has been playing the part of the Bird Woman in the acclaimed theatre production of Mary
Poppins in London’s West End – Petula has had one of the longest careers of a British singer. Tonight begins with a new compilation programme,
Petula Clark at the BBC, followed by a 1974 concert from the Royal Albert Hall (10pm & 10.45pm) and ends with an episode of The Sound of Petula
(11.30pm), the singer’s musical variety BBC series which ran from 1972 to 1974. ★★★ JP
