DRESS UNIFORM
Although in the book Lib is described as wearing a grey tweed nurse’s uniform, costume designer Odile Dicks-mireaux felt that blue would work better on screen. After first checking with the Florence Nightingale Museum in London that there was no specific uniform at the time, she made a simple dress that was not too tailored and was designed to work in.
Then for young Anna’s clothes, Odile turned to a classic story.
‘There were a lot of pictures available of young girls taken around the time of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,’ she says. ‘There were some great pictures of girls in nightdresses and day dresses. And also, I looked at pictures of the girls in their sun bonnets and overalls.’
