Wednesday night on BBC4 is now established as nostalgia drama night, and this week sees a rerun of this 1990s political series, with an introduction from author Michael Dobbs, whose novel inspired Andrew Davies’ screenplay. It centres on Francis Urquhart, a fictional Chief Whip of the Conservative Party, deliciously played by Ian Richardson, and follows the Machiavellian politics of the day as he elbows his way to the top job. Dobbs’ novel was also adapted for the US Netflix series in 2013. ★★★★ MC
