Last week’s third episode saw a daring operation behind enemy lines to destroy a host of German aircraft, but the spectacular explosions were filmed using CGI.

‘We had six genuine Messerschmitts, which we used for close-up scenes where soldiers were planting bombs,’ explains Stephen. ‘But, obviously, we couldn’t blow them up! Instead, we represented the position of the aircraft with a lamp on a large stick, and turned it on momentarily to give lighting effects for the explosion. The CGI guys replaced the lamp with aircraft in post-production.’
