‘They were unbelievably tricky to operate and very unreliable,’ says Stephen. ‘They didn’t have proper cooling systems, so when we started using them in 50°C temperatures, they started failing after a few minutes because the petrol was evaporating in the pipes!

‘We had a team of engineers working on them morning, noon and night to keep them going, but if you look carefully at some of the wide desert scenes, you can see all of the jeeps driving off and a couple not going anywhere!’
