The Phantom of the Open

-

FILM 5.55PM, SKY PREMIERE, NOW

Young actor-turned-director Craig Roberts merges crowd-pleasing material with his own sideways-on spirit in this comedy drama which premiered yesterday.

It’s the true-life mid-1970s tale of Maurice Flitcroft (Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance), a crane operator who responds to redundancy by entering the golfing Open – even though he can’t play. With a script by Paddington 2 co-writer Simon Farnaby (who also co-wrote the source book with Scott Murray) and a supporting cast including Rhys Ifans, Sally Hawkins and Mark Lewis Jones, this hits the feel-good spot. ★★★★ KH
