Gathering a starry cast very much in the vein of a classic Agatha Christie whodunit, this incredibly likeable comedy set in 1953 cranks things up by having the police investigate the murder of a film writer (Adrien Brody) in the backstage area of Christie play The Mousetrap. The cops are Sam Rockwell’s laconic Inspector Stoppard and Saoirse Ronan’s wide-eyed innocent Constable Stalker, the best double act on screen for quite a while. Suspects include Ruth Wilson, David Oyelowo and Harris Dickinson (playing Richard Attenborough). While it isn’t quite as funny as it could have been, the whole enterprise bounces along with such joyful abandon that you’ll hardly care. NP
