Tobey Maguire shines in this absorbing biopic about US chess prodigy Bobby Fischer. The film centres on Fischer’s acclaimed World Championship contest against reigning Soviet champion Boris Spassky (played by a cool, laconic Liev Schreiber) in Reykjavik in 1972, and director Edward Zwick (Glory) and screenwriter Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) do a fine job of capturing the Cold War tension against which the game took place. Even for the uninitiated, the film’s gripping climactic final showdown won’t disappoint. JB
