FINN BROTHERS EVERYONE IS HERE
The second album project with brother Tim is recorded twice, after the original version with producer Tony Visconti is scrapped I talk about this album often when things get tough in the studio: “Well, at least we haven’t had to record this twice!” It wasn’t like we had a mug on the console. Tony was amazing, an incredible producer. I don’t know how he feels about it now; I imagine there was disappointment at the time, but the reason I made it again wasn’t anything to do with what Tony did or didn’t do. Sometimes the ingredients are just not quite right. We went right through to mixing, and there was some good music on there, but it didn’t sit well after a month of living with it. Also, I got a call from the head of Parlophone, saying, “We love the record – we just wonder if there’s something you could add to it?” Classic record company! It’s the most annoying call an artist can get, but it coincided with me feeling a little uncertain that we had made the record as good as it could be. I’d had high hopes for “Won’t Give In” and “Nothing Wrong With You” and I knew we hadn’t nailed them. I phoned [producer] Jon Brion and we put a little combo together in LA, and quite quickly we went in with the intention of doing those two songs. It was such a spectacular success, we decided we should just do all of the songs again. It was such a step up. So in the end we made that record quite quickly, and Mitchell Froom helped me finish it.
