GEOWULF
Great Big Blue 37 ADvENTURES 6/10
Australian duo embrace the elements on dream-pop debut
When not inviting one to “come to the ocean” on the sugary but unshakably catchy “Saltwater”, Geowulf create music that feels – through breezy guitar licks and floating vocals – intentionally evocative of sandy beaches and glistening sunshine. Debut Great Big Blue avoids the moody ambience of dream-pop comrades such as Beach House and instead embraces more mainstream pop tendencies on “Greatest Fool” and “Hideaway”, songs that are rooted in ’60s pop melody but still sound contemporary. Over 11 tracks the formula admittedly feels a little one-note and limited in scope, but the pair’s gift for melody shines nonetheless.
