Members of Shearwater and Cross Record have a fateful meeting

A collaboration born of shared tours by their respective bands, Loma teams Shearwater leader Jonathan Meiburg with the Cross Record duo of Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski. Things can’t have been easy in the house in rural Texas that hosted these sessions, what with Cross and Duszynski breaking up during the recording. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most desolate music here – like the pointedly titled “I Don’t Want Children”, sung by Cross in her ghostliest voice – evokes the chilly beauty of Nico’s Desertshore. “Relay Runner” and “Jornada” boast more muscular sensibilities, with pulsing rhythms that bust through the layers of eerie drones and noises that make Loma as unsettling as it is compelling.
