Room inside The World 7/10
Impatient, ambitious third from Montreal quartet
Ought first distinguished themselves with the serrated, panicky post-punk of More Than Any Other Day, a record born out of the group’s experiences at McGill University as student protests swept Quebec in 2012. On Room Inside The World, we hear them filling out their sound with synths, vibraphone and – on “Desire” – a 70-piece choir, and the songs are growing too, laced with emotional nuance. “These 3 Things” pulls a sort of Future Islands trick, mixing synthetic sounds with a hyper-sincere performance from vocalist Tim Darcy, while “Brief Shield” is a heavy-lidded love song with shades of ’90s post-rock wanderers like Tortoise or The Sea And Cake.
