A FANATIC HEART: BOB GELDOF ON WB YEATS
6/10
A literary documentary with the copperbottomed cast list of a rock-star tribute, Geldof’s exploration of Yeats is an intriguing watch – not least because it is framed by an emotional, rather than academic response to the poet’s work. In Geldof’s words, “Willy” was “Ireland articulate”, who “sang the country into being”, and his citations include disparate readings from Van Morrison, Shane MacGowan, Noel Gallagher and Sting. Extras: 8/10. Three hours’ worth, including Bono’s portentous “Mad As The Mist And Snow” and Elvis Costello’s Waits-like take on “A Drunken Man’s Praise Of Sobriety”.
