Free jazz drummer (1936–2017)
Free jazz drummer James ‘Sunny’ Murray first came to prominence with cecil Taylor in the early ’60s, his
non-linear percussion a key feature of the trio’s avant-garde approach. By 1965 he’d hooked up with Albert Ayler, playing on the classic Spiritual Unity and releasing Sunny’s Time Now, the first of 12 albums recorded under his own name. Murray’s other sideman credits included gil Evans, Art Blakey and Archie Shepp.
