Brigid Mae power: “We are all huge contradictions…”

- INTERVIEW: ALASTAIR MckAY

where are you living? Have you resolved your feelings about the restrictiveness of Ireland?

i’m living about 10 minutes outside of Galway city. i wouldn’t say i have fully resolved the feeling, but these last few months i have not felt as restricted as i used to. i delved a lot into my ancestry, the history and culture of the island. i also have heard lots of stories of people who are only now feeling able to speak up about what it’s been like to grow up here. having an understanding of why it’s felt restricted for many has expanded my view.

what are the ‘Two worlds’ of the title?

it started with a feeling of how to balance your day-today life with honouring who you are and what you need to do. The two worlds are also the worlds i was feeling around me. Very extreme ideas seem to be popping up all over the world. For a lot of people, these beliefs are incomprehensible. But how do we accept and keep living with each other? The two worlds are also the contradiction between someone’s ideas of who they are and who they actually are. i was thinking about a man i knew with conservative views and maybe a slight want for a restrictive politics, but in his personal life i observed he was really open-minded and caring, never judgmental.
