WHITE DENIM D

-

2011

Joined by guitarist Austin Jenkins, White Denim get more complex, and a little more restrained TEREBECKI: This was our first record that was on Downtown Records, so we had a little bit of an advance which we used to get into a proper studio. [Lakeside owner] Ryan Joseph has all the best stuff in the history of recorded music – all the top stuff.

PETRALLI: Lakeside is a home studio, but it’s the craziest one you can imagine. Ryan has every piece of gear, a giant Neve console, multiple plate reverbs, four tape machines. He’s still a good friend, I was over there cutting the other day. You know the movie, The Room? He’s like a more with-it version of Tommy Wiseau – he’s been building this insane studio complex to finish his own record, which remains unfinished. I’ve been working on his record with him for a really long time. Look out for his band, Ronjo V.

TEREBECKI: This was the first time we had to watch the clock, so there was a lot more pre-production. And more or less we had everything written for D before we went in, so all we had to do was knock up the takes. So the recording of D actually in the studio went pretty fast. We still did it one instrument at a time – drums first, then bass then guitars and vocals, but it was way quicker than the previous three records.

PETRALLI: We started playing some of these songs and I realised I couldn’t swing the guitar parts and sing at the same time, so we hired Austin for a tour. When we got off the tour, we had him overdub a couple of guitar parts on D.
