Gave In Rest BA DA BING! 9/10 Music from a quiet place – clearheaded, startling ambience

Canadian artist Sarah Davachi has been a questing presence in experimental music for the past decade. She’s restlessly inquisitive, always working on ideas, releasing albums at a furious clip (11 since 2013). Gave In Rest, though, feels like a breakout moment for Davachi, and it’s all the more impressive given how she’s not compromised to reach this point. Her interest in medieval and early music offers her compositions both a somnolent beauty and a melancholy grasp of simple, slow melody that’s refined and tender – pieces on Gave In Rest such as “Third Hour” and “Matins” move glacially, and with incredible grace. They’re stunning.
