YOKO ONO

- JAson AnDeRson

Warzone CHIMERA 7/10 The 85-year-old revisits her most pointed songs, plus one of John’s

The sound of Ono gravely warbling “Imagine” at the close of Warzone may invite yet more ridicule from longtime haters. But believers in her musical vision will deem it very much of a piece with the boldness that marks these new renditions of many of her most furious songs, inspired by the injustice Ono sees in the present. Featuring guests such as Nico Muhly and Marc Ribot, the mostly stark arrangements work best for “I Love You Earth” and “Hell In Paradise”, now freed from the dated synth trappings of 1985’s Starpeace. While some may prefer the title track’s earlier death-metal incarnation, her revisiting of Plastic Ono-era assaults like “Woman Power” fully preserve the fury of the originals.
