released in full hD, simultaneously with Fellini’s outsiderist debut, I Vitelloni, this technicolour fantasy of the psyche is an arch, exquisite exploration of women, sex and the power of dreams. the director’s wife and muse (giulietta Masina) plays her namesake – a bored housewife, drifting into reverie over saucepot neighbour Sandra Milo (rather spicily, Fellini’s reallife mistress). it’s bizarre, beautiful and seductive, with the obligatory whiz-popping score from nino rota.
