UNCUT

THE MODERN COVERS

-

Regarding the contentious issue of Uncut cover stars. I think the average reader understands why you can’t stick Alvvays on the cover, but what’s frustrating to me is that you’re still timid about giving Uncut-friendly,

well-established artists, who are now headlining festivals and filling large halls and/or arenas a chance at the cover. Surely The National, Wilco, Ryan Adams, or LCD Soundsystem are worthy of a cover story by now?

Also, Uncut has done a terrific job of promoting incredible acts like The Hold Steady and Richmond Fontaine but it’s sad that these bands have never broken through; in fact one of these bands is no longer with us. Makes you wonder if things could have been different if magazines like Uncut had been brave enough to stick them on a cover from time to time.

Go on, take a chance occasionally! Matt Royal, via email A bit of ancient history for you, but Ryan Adams was originally scheduled to be on the cover of Uncut back in 2001. In the end, circumstances forced our hand and we published a tribute cover to George Harrison. Who knows how things might have turned out had Ryan stayed on the cover… …How about doing a cover story on The Style Council? To my knowledge none of the main music magazines have ever done one, certainly as far back as I can remember. Surely now is the time? A timely reminder of just how good they were. Wellerfella is such a wonderfully perennial and ubiquitous presence in music but there never seems to be enough focus on TSC. Will you consider? Jeff lowe, Dublin
