3 Psalms 6/10
Roxy Music’s sax man turns classical composer
A labour of love, it has taken Mackay a quarter of a century to realise his vision of scoring selections from the Book Of Psalms – which he sang as a boy chorister – for symphony orchestra, choir, synthesisers, guitar (played by old Roxy mate Phil Manzanera) and, of course, his own virtuosic sax playing. With Harry Day-Lewis (nephew of Daniel) as the principal vocalist, the three pieces – two sonatas and a rondo – synthesise influences from Purcell to Stockhausen via rock’n’roll and church liturgy into an extraordinary post-rock oratorio. Sounding more like Jan Garbarek’s Officium than “Virginia Plain”, the results are as impressive as they are unexpected.
