Another stunner from London’s thriving ‘new jazz’ scene

Having provided the opening track on February’s indispensable UK jazz primer We Out Here, Maisha are rounding off the year with an equally essential album of their own. Led by drummer Jake Long, the sextet are clearly well-versed in the touchstones of spiritual jazz, though their trip is more bucolic than cosmic, invigorated by occasional bursts of African rhythm. Saxophonist/flautist Nubya Garcia is the group’s trump card, but every member has a key role to play, including the additional harp and string players, who contribute to lush arrangements that recall Charles Stepney’s work for Rotary Connection and Ramsey Lewis. A lovely record.
