LA-based singer-songwriter teams up with Jim James

Produced by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, the debut album by this Anglo-American singer-songwriter gets through a lot of genres: lurching from the burbling cod-reggae of “Man On My Mind” to the Phil Spector-ish drum stomps of “Who Am I To Tell You” via the Beach House-style synthesised arpeggios in “Different This Time”. There are lots of lightly retro arrangements and nods to 1960s bubblegum pop, with Murr creating delightfully antique textures on Omnichords, Mellotrons and toy pianos. However, the cover version of Yoko Ono’s “I Have A Woman Inside My Soul” slightly shows up the thinness of Murr’s own material.
