PLANNINgTOROCK
Powerhouse 7/10
Brit producer’s third presents brave new personal world
With 2014’s “Patriarchy Over & Out”, Berlin-based singer, musician and producer Jam (formerly Janine) Rostron launched Planningtorock’s laser-cut, leftfield disco pop onto a more explicitly political path. Now though, they’re addressing non-binary gender identification and queer orientation in a more personal way and – on the endearing “Beulah Loves Dancing”, the unsettlingly inexplicit “Dear Brother” and the title track’s sweet homage to their music-loving mother – even mining family history. It’s a warmly pristine, groovily poignant set, with vocals pitched for gender neutrality and an ear for a great hook, that celebrates the liberation afforded by music as much as personal freedom through life choices.
