RATTLE

Sequence 7/10

- Jon DALe

Drums and voices, nothing more, nothing less

For their second album, Rattle, the duo of Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley, double down on the intensive focus of their self-titled 2016 debut. Working with the simplest of kits – just drums and vocals – the four long songs on Sequence do their bidding via cumulative impact: “DJ” locks into a multi-limbed, hydra rhythm that’s joyously unrelenting; “The Rocks” floats on seas of cymbals. Parts of the album recall OOIOO, New York nowavers Pulsallama, or The Raincoats circa Moving, but there’s a welcome freshness to Sequence; it may be smartly, deftly constructed, but it feels free and open.
