THE REVIVALISTS
Take Good Care 5/10
New Orleans-based band hits and misses on follow-up to smash single
The nostalgia-soaked “Wish I Knew You”, The Revivalists’ 2015 US alternative charttopper, raised the bar for the veteran group, and they embrace the challenge as their fourth album unfolds, lining up a series of radio-ready tracks, including lead single “All My Friends”, “turn[ing] the hourglass over” on “Wish I Knew You”; “Change”, with its Black Keyslike crunch; the supple, vividly drawn “You Said It All”; and the scalding rocker “Oh No”. But after a scintillating eight-song run, the record drives off the cliff, killing the momentum with recycled lyrics and telegraphed hooks, so what might’ve been an irresistible 10-track album turns into a 14-track disappointment. An editor would’ve made a huge difference.
