Fourth Xiu Xiu/Larsen hook-up births unsettling psych set

Prolific US expermentalists Xiu Xiu and italian post-rock wanderers larsen have a simple, fruitful modus operandi: meet up, jam for a few days, edit an album out of it. The meeting of their styles produces ever-evolving and eclectic results, and this fourth album together is an engagingly creepy set of dark psych. Best by far is “Koala Queen”, a clanking, seductive gothic groove, though the driving, expansive “Ghost Maid” with its keening guitar, the synth wigouts and hammy horror vocal effects of “Carissimo” and the hellmouth blast of “Welcome To My Planet” run it close. delightful for a dark night in.
